Anointing of the Sick

Anointing, like the other sacraments, can be traced back to the earliest days of the church. During the history of the Church it received the name "extreme unction" due to the fact that it was often reserved for those in danger of near death. This is still done but the sacrament is not strictly reserved to those near death and can be given in hope of healing and recovery from serious illness. The sacrament can also be received more than once and is fitting just prior to a major operation.

 It is fitting that the sacrament be proceeded by Penance and followed by Eucharist as it prepares us for our meeting with God. When one receives these sacraments together, particularly on the verge of death, we call this the 'viaticum' for passing over to eternal life.

Through the reception of this Sacrament the ill are:

- given the grace of strength, peace and courage to overcome their difficulties

- lead to the healing of the soul and body

- forgiven of their sins

- united more closely to Christ's Passion
