Baptism

Welcome, and congratulations on the blessing of your child!

We at Good Shepherd share your joy and look forward to the day when your child will be welcomed into the Catholic Christian community of faith. We are excited to walk with you as you prepare to celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism in this parish community.

“Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments” (CCC 1213).

Through Baptism we are:

- Freed from sin and reborn as adopted sons and daughters of God

 - Welcomed into the Body of Christ as members of His Church

- Freed from the power of darkness to walk in the light as children of God

- Made sharers in the mission of the Church

Baptism Classes

The parent(s) of the child to be baptized are required to attend a preparation class prior to the child being baptized. This baptism class will help to prepare the parents for this special day in their child’s life.

Choosing Godparents

When you invite a person(s) to serve as your child’s Godparent, you are asking this individual(s) to make a lifelong commitment to your child. The day of your child’s Baptism marks just the beginning of the Godparent-Godchild relationship. It is the hope of the Church that your child’s Godparents will be lifelong companions who will nurture your child’s faith and help him or her become a true disciple of Christ.

Godparents are called to:

Help their Godchild grow in faith

Teach their Godchild about the Catholic traditions

Model for their Godchild how to live a Catholic life

When choosing Godparents they must be:

A Catholic who has received the Sacrament of Confirmation and regularly participates in the Eucharist

An active member of a Catholic faith community

At least sixteen years of age.

If married, they must be married in the Church

Please Note: All Godparents will be required to attend a baptism preparation class or submit a letter/certificate that they have attended a class from another Catholic parish community.

Setting the Date

Once all paperwork has been submitted and Baptism classes have been completed by parents and Godparents, you will be able to set the date for the baptism of your child. This must be done at least 2 weeks in advance. Baptisms will be offered on most Saturdays of the Month.
